January 2008 Archives
Yes, it's snowing in Atlanta this evening. It was 75 degrees outside two weeks ago and now it's snowing. Go figure.
And yes, the grocery stores around here are already out of milk, eggs, and bread. I'm pretty sure the schools will be closed tomorrow morning.
The snow is actually sticking to the grass, though it's already melted on the roads and our roof. Usually, it melts almost as soon as it lands. We had a pretty good cover this evening, though.
We were at the mall this evening when people suddenly starting yelling, "It's snowing outside!!!" We went to the inner court area and I let the girls play outside in it for a while before we headed home. Maddie loves it. She runs around and tries to catch every flake with her tongue. She also wanted to know if it meant that Christmas was here again.
Josie, on the other hand, HATES it. Each time a snowflake would land on her she would whimper and say, "Get it off me!" She's just not digging the whole cold and wet thing. This evening when Bill got home we went outside to let Maddie run around in it a little more. She made snowballs and would throw them at Josie, who was standing inside the storm door. Josie liked that part and would run away, then come back and yell, "Throw one at me again, Maddie!"
When we were putting the girls to bed tonight, Maddie asked if she could go outside and play in the snow again tomorrow. She really wants to make a "snowdog." For her sake, I hope that at least a little is still there in the morning. I can't imagine we'll have many more days of snow in Atlanta this year. Heck, tonight was the first time I've been able to wear my new coat since I got it for Christmas!
Josie got her new glasses yesterday. She has finally outgrown the need for the cable temple (the little part that wraps around her ear) so she was able to pick out any pair of glasses she wanted. Cable temples can only be used on wire rim glasses, so our choices were limited up until now.
She ended up choosing the pink pair below. Doesn't she look adorable? She'll be 3 in a few weeks and she's looking less and less like my little baby every day.
Prior to picking up her glasses yesterday, we had some a "big girl talk" about taking care of them. Lately, Josie has a tendency to take her glasses off and just leave them anywhere. Now that she has her new glasses, she knows she needs to take extra special care of them. She got a new case and cleaning cloth when we picked them up (she got to pick her own color cloth -- purple) and she has been carrying it around with her. Earlier today she started to take her glasses off to change into some of her play clothes. I saw her start to set them on the floor and reminded her that they needed to go in her case. She went and gingerly put them in the case, laying the cloth on top of them and closing it, before going back to play. She did the same thing tonight without any reminder. Maybe this will work after all.
We are now a 2 car family!
Actually, this happened about 2 weeks ago, but I'm just now getting around to blogging about it. After months of looking for a used car that 1) wasn't part of a scam or 2) didn't have a major defect, we finally found one. We bought a little red Ford Escort on January 2nd. Bill has been using it to commute to work. It gets better mileage than the CRV, which I keep at home to use with the girls during the day. I keep forgetting to take a picture of the new car, which is why there isn't one here to show you.
I'm very excited about it, but it has also been quite an adjustment. It has been a little over 4 years since we had two cars (other than a two month period where we had my grandfather's car.) I'd gotten very used to spending time talking to Bill on the drives to drop him off at work or pick him up in the evening. Now, it's odd to have each of us coming and going at the same time. Feels very weird. I'd also been feeling pretty proud of the fact that we were living in a more "green" fashion, and saving money at the same time. I can't say that's the case now, but I still try to limit my mileage if I can. Unfortunately, there just isn't much you can do without a car here in Atlanta. (So often I wish that Atlanta were more like other big cities with developed public transportation systems, but, for lack of better words, ours just plain sucks.)
It's fun being able to do more spontaneous things during the day with the girls. We've had a lot of fun the last week or so meeting friends at the park or story time, or just making a run to the grocery store to get ingredients for cupcakes. Also, just knowing that it's there in the driveway -- even if we don't go anywhere -- is comforting because we could if we wanted to.
2007 was a very exciting year for us and if 2008 is anything like it has been so far, it's going to be a memorable one as well.
